ChatFiler, a Chrome add-on that saves your AI chats as files, by Digital-X, LLC (Arizona, USA). Last updated: 22 October 2026.

The short version: ChatFiler turns the AI chat in front of you into a file on your computer. Your chat is never sent to us or to anyone else. We have no servers, no accounts and no analytics.

Works with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. ChatFiler is independently developed and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.

What the add-on reads

ChatFiler reads a chat only when you ask it to: you click its toolbar button, or press Alt+Shift+E, on a chat page, and choose "Export" or "Add a summary, then export". It reads that one tab. It cannot see other tabs or other websites, and it does nothing in the background while you browse.

From that tab it reads:

Export reads the chat once. Add a summary, then export reads it once, then watches the end of that same chat for the summary, for up to 20 minutes. If you open a different chat in that tab, it stops reading until you come back. Close the tab, or the bar the add-on shows at the top of the chat, and it stops for good.

If you switch to another chat while ChatFiler is reading, the export stops, so two chats never end up in one file.

What happens to your chat

The add-on does all its work on your computer:

  1. It collects the conversation from the page.
  2. It keeps that copy in your browser's memory only until the export screen opens: a few seconds after "Export", or until the summary arrives. The copy is deleted as soon as the export screen picks it up. Close the tab first and the copy goes with it.
  3. It lists your questions at the top of the file (you can switch this off), and adds the summary if you asked for one.
  4. You choose Markdown or PDF. The file is created on your computer and saved where your browser saves downloads. PDF files are made by Chrome's own "Save as PDF".

The add-on does not keep a copy of your chat. It does not save a history of what you exported. It stores nothing on your computer or in your Google account; the only thing it leaves behind is the file you chose to save.

The summary

The summary is optional, and the add-on sends nothing to get it.

Choose "Add a summary, then export" and ChatFiler places a short, fixed request in the chat's message box, if the box is empty. It never touches a message you have started typing, and it never presses Send. If you send the request, the chat's own AI answers it like any other message, and ChatFiler reads that answer off the page and puts it at the top of your file. The request and the answer are left out of the transcript in your file, but they stay in your chat history on that site, under that service's privacy policy, like everything else you write there.

Choose "Export" and there is no request and no summary.

What leaves your computer

Your chat does not. ChatFiler sends nothing you type or read in a chat to us or to anyone else, and we have no server to send it to.

One thing does use the internet: pictures, and they carry no part of your conversation. To put a picture inside your file, the add-on fetches it again from where the chat page shows it from (the chat service or its image host), or copies it from the picture on your screen. Those requests go to the chat service you are already using, never to us. Nothing is uploaded.

If you send the summary request, that message goes from you to the chat service, like anything else you type there. ChatFiler only puts it in the box.

What we collect

Nothing. No analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no crash reports, no account. We do not know who uses ChatFiler or what they export.

Because we collect nothing, we sell nothing and share nothing. Our use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Other companies

Children

ChatFiler is not directed at children under 13, and it collects nothing from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If the add-on ever starts handling information differently, we will update this page before that version is released, and change the date at the top.
